Rising concern over the degradation of environment has resulted in an increase in research on identification and study of environmental problems all over the world. Of recent much of these works are increasingly being supported by systems like GIS.

Backed with one of the best GIS implementations in the world - the 'Qatar GIS', the Environment Department of the State of Qatar has developed GIS applications and has started using GIS for Decision Support in a big way! Implementing GIS itself in the department was a meticulously chalked out plan and this paper highlights the salient features of our efforts in completely integrating environment management in the country with GIS

The objective is to develop an all-encompassing Environment Monitoring and Management System that revolves around " - State of Environment - Pressure - Response - " model. This model shall be aopted by the Environment Department as a fundamental step towards defining the functionality of te department in mould of 'Sustainable Development'
