The Secretary of Defense has directed the Special Operations Command, Pacific (SOCPAC) and OSD Humanitarian Assistance and Demining Team to conduct humanitarian demining assistance operations in Laos. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a mapping production capability for the Laos government to better support the demining effort.

A prototype geospatial-based information management program has been developed for support of the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) operations on-going in Laos. The Laos Demining Information Management Program incorporates all Viet Nam Era data (1965 - 1975) from bombing (Navy/AF fighter/bombers and B52 operations), Herbicides, and Special Operations Aerial missions recovered from the National Archives, ordnance characteristics databases, and spatial feature data for the country of Laos.
