The GIS professional community from the greater San Francisco Bay Area has become the foundation of an important public-private partnership, based on the known regional earthquake threat. The goal of the project, entitiled Development of "HAZUS" Earthquake Risk Assessment Capabilities for the San Francisco Bay Area, California, is to save lives and reduce property losses after the next major San Francisco Bay Area earthquake. The project has an active HAZUS User Group numbering 450 members representing over 100 organizational and corporate partnerships. The project is based around the dissemination, training and use of FEMA's national standardized loss-estimation GIS software and databases known as HAZUS. HAZUS is ArcView-based and is being disseminated by FEMA for free. Many useful national databases are included with the program. In addition to the operational earthquake module, flood and wind modules are under development by FEMA in order to create a National Risk Assessment System. The project web site is www.hazus.org.
