Identification of land sites that meet particular criteria is one of the main spatial analytical applications of geographic information systems. A multicriterion evaluation system provides a systematic approach to site selection. Siting a sanitary landfill requires a substantial evaluation process in order to identify the best available disposal location that meets the requirements of government regulations and best minimizes economic, environmental, health, and social costs. Regulations and public opposition make siting municipal solid waste landfills difficult. GIS can be used in constraint mapping, which eliminates unsuitable sites and narrows down the number of sites for further consideration. In this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the site suitability conditions for locating the sanitary landfills using GIS.
