Using GPS to Establish Legality of Public Road Claims and to Update a 1:24,000-Scale GIS Road Centerline Database Author: Cindy Lou McDonald 120 East Main Street Phone: 435 636 3265 The 1999 State of Utah Legislature allocated funding for 21 counties to gather evidence supporting claims of public roads. Carbon County claims 1,000 miles of back country roads under the 1860s Mining Act Revised Statute 2477 or by prescriptive use laws as Class D County Roads. This paper outlines the use of resource grade GPS and digital cameras to prepare road claims for legal action. The project is being completed with occasional cooperation of private landowners and the Bureau of Land Management. In addition, there will be discussion of updating the existing 1:24,000-scale road centerline database (currently in use by all County departments) with the more accurate GPS data. |
