Watershed Characterization and Assessment in New Jersey Using ArcView GIS Author: Thomas Joseph Belton 401 East State Street, 1st Floor Phone: 609 633-3866 NJDEP is drafting Watershed Characterization and Assessment (WCA) reports for 20 watershed management areas. The reports provide the technical basis for establishing priorities; development of watershed-based goals, milestones, indicators; and management actions in watershed management plans. The process entails heavy public participation where GIS applications are optimal for presenting diverse technical information to a nontechnical audience. GIS maps are used in WCA reports, public meetings, and the DEP's Web page. Maps include municipalities, hydrology, topography, impervious surface, land use/land cover, population density, monitoring, water supply, dischargers, storm water, and contaminated sites. GIS support includes BASINS modeling, the Reach Indexing Tool, and ArcView Spatial Analyst. |
