The Lewin Group (TLG) is using GIS for a variety of clients to analyze the health of specific populations, namely women and children and the underserved, to better target resources and plan and evaluate health-related interventions. TLG is working on maternal and child health program planning at both the state and local level. At the state level, TLG is using GIS to conduct a statewide needs assessment to target areas where there is a mismatch between the supply of health resources and the demand for health services and to plan activities, given scarce resources. At the local level, TLG, in a joint project with Esri, is creating a dynamic GIS to help a county health department monitor and decrease disparities in infant mortality. In addition, as part of its evaluation of a national foundation initiative to increase access to health care for underserved populations, TLG used GIS to verify the areas where programs propose to develop outreach programs, reach their target populations, and have a policy impact.
