To determine which areas, or refugia, should be protected to ensure salmonid survival in Kitsap County, Washington, a study merging GIS and field reconnaissance surveys was conducted. Field results were input into ArcView GIS and overlaid with GIS natural resources data to be analyzed and displayed. A suitability model was created and, using ArcView Spatial Analyst, results showing the relative ranking of each refugium were obtained. Rankings were based on parameters necessary for salmonid survival. This paper outlines the steps taken toward identifying and prioritizing the refugia as well as how the study's outcomes influenced land preservation and the rewriting of regulations.
