Oceanographers have for years developed their own specialized GIS software for the analysis and display of their data. As the GIS field has become more mature and new Web-oriented products are being developed, this seemed an appropriate time to review what a powerful desktop product like ArcView GIS could contribute to oceanographic research. Some prototype applications that were developed to make researchers aware of the capabilities of current GIS technology are presented here, along with some of the challenges that need to be addressed to allow more effective integration of these two fields.
