ArcView GIS, with the ArcView Spatial Analyst and ArcView 3D Analyst extensions, is ideal to process and display agricultural field topographic data. Important for irrigation, drainage control, and other farm applications, one centimeter accurate topographic data can be obtained with the use of a high-accuracy real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS receiver. The receiver provides data to a specially designed field computer that records in the Esri shapefile (SHP) and dBASE (DBF) file format. The use of standard Esri file formats enables maximum usefulness of the data collected as the data files can be opened directly from ArcView GIS. This paper demonstrates how existing GPS technology and off-the-shelf Esri software are revolutionizing topographic data collection.
