This is a discussion of measures for achieving good performance in an Internet geospatial application. On the server, this application uses Informix with the Esri SDE DataBlade, query servlets, and the MrSID image server; on the client, it uses a custom Java applet. An examination will be made of techniques that can be used to gain a balance between performance and functionality: client versus server-side functionality, optimizing query performance, database design, use of images, client-side caching, and client-side memory management. This discussion is based on the Geode application developed at the U.S.
Geological Survey.
