The process of developing environmentally protective and cost-effective management strategies for contaminated sediment sites poses several challenges. These challenges usually involve understanding the complex relationships between analytical, geomorphologic, and biological data. The use of GIS in developing effective sediment management strategies has been shown to be a great benefit. GIS can be used to examine the spatial relationships that may exist between the various data sets, allowing for an optimal management strategy to be developed. Additionally, GIS can be used to examine the effects of sediment remediation at other sites, which can aid in the evaluation of remedial strategies.
