Following a hurricane, municipalities are often faced with a cleanup process that can be challenging to implement across several contractors and city departments. Perhaps one of the most difficult tasks facing city officials is the estimation of debris quantities. The City of Houston has recently implemented a GIS application to forecast debris under a variety of possible scenarios. The system uses a scientific model with data processed in ArcInfo and presented in a MapObjects interface. Using this management tool, City officials can predict actual amounts of debris in cubic yards as well as amounts of various categories of debris. Finally, the system alerts officials as to the estimated landfill area needed to hold the debris once removed.
