Build-out analysis using GIS provides communities with an approximate vision of the future development that would be allowed within the community under current regulation. Applied Geographics, Inc., has been involved in two community build-out analysis projects. The project with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs was to provide the residents of the community with the ability to compare their goals and personal wishes for the community's future with the potential for future growth. The project with the Massachusetts Berkshire Regional Planning Commission focused on identifying and mapping lands in potential zoning sites for economic development. This paper focuses on how GIS was utilized in these two build-out analysis projects, which have different purposes and levels of detail. The paper focuses on using ArcInfo and ArcView GIS tools to efficiently allocate potential lands for residential or economic development.
