Significant progress has been made in the development of Internet GIS applications with the help of Esri software such as MapObjects Internet Map Server (IMS). However, most Internet GIS applications are limited to simple map display and database query. Very few offer GIS analysis tools over the Internet. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has developed a prototype of Internet GIS Analysis Tools for Environmental Data using the Esri MapObjects Internet Map Server technology. This application provides the public easy Web access to analysis and display of various environment-related and pollution-related data. Public users can use this application to identify environmental and pollution information within a user-defined buffer zone of their home, school, and churches. This application provides public users a wide range of online functionality that analyzes the correlation between the pollution level and the minority percentage in any community and identifies areas where certain environmental pollution indicators have significantly improved or deteriorated.
