GEN7 is an extensively customized ArcView GIS interface for local government that is being deployed to nearly every desk and counter in Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It is currently used by hundreds of City and County employees. The interface has nearly 1,500 customized scripts, dozens of extensions, and over a hundred dialogs that define an interface that provide local government users with the capability to meet their everyday business needs. GEN7 is deployed in mission-critical areas and is used as the basis of defining vertical applications meeting specific work flow requirements. It is an interface that enables applications to be rapidly developed to meet the changing needs that are the product of a major reengineering effort in Cincinnati/Hamilton County. This paper not only will discuss the elements of GEN7 and why it is designed using ArcView GIS, but more importantly will discuss how its development has been driven by the need to match technology to the requirements of a transforming enterprise. The enterprise vision and strategy for achieving that vision will be discussed in tandem with the development concepts and specifics of the GEN7 interface.
