This paper provides an exploration of geostatistical and interactive techniques used for the generation of TIN surface models from airborne scanning lidar data. Feature identification and extraction present a significant challenge in terms of automated data processing. A combination of geostatistical and interactive approaches is investigated in an attempt to streamline and enhance the data processing procedure. The focus is on the trend surface and kriging commands within GRID and proprietary lidar data editing software. Derived surfaces are evaluated for accuracy and completeness using ground control, kinematic GPS, and other existing topographic data.
