Airborne Laser Technology--Scanning the Earth Author: Krysia Christine Sapeta 1935 Jamboree Dr Phone: (719) 593-0093 LIght Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology is one of the newest developments for the mapping industry. The system consists of GPS positioning, orientation derived from high-end inertial sensors, and a powerful laser. The laser is precision fit and surveyed relative to the GPS antenna in an airplane. Once airborne, the laser emits rapid pulses of light that are used to determine distances between the plane and terrain below, for immediate creation of a DTM. This presentation discusses technology, accuracy, and benefits of this DTM collection process. Sample data from actual projects shows results for digital orthophoto and contour mapping. |
