Modeling features of the virtual landscape involves new issues regarding representation and content. The physical infrastructure of the Internet is extremely dynamic--constantly expanding in form and content. Geographic information systems are used to create maps of the digital economy. By illustrating the current geographic realities via GIS maps, the myth of a universally accessible global Internet is shattered. The Internet cuts through societies, creating distinct digital divides. It is hoped that the application of GIS may enhance and improve decision making regarding public and private policy. |
