The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments of 1996 require states to implement source water assessment plans (SWAPs) to better protect public drinking water from contamination. The identification of potential contamination sources is an important component of this plan. The Center for Agricultural, Resource and Environmental Systems at the University of Missouri has been contracted by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to develop and implement strategies for performing source water inventories. This paper will discuss the role of GIS and tool development for fieldwork data collection in source water inventories.
