This paper explains how the ArcView GIS system was used at the University of Pittsburgh as a tool to assist medieval scholars in analyzing and teaching about medieval manuscripts. Standard GIS features such as shapes, themes, tables, and properties were used to describe components of the manuscripts, and standard GIS functionality such as pan, zoom, identify, and hot links provided excellent means to navigate the manuscripts. GIS systems have proven to hold great potential for providing widespread access to delicate and rare manuscripts and other similar artifacts for researchers and students. The paper also discusses several other nontraditional potential applications for GIS.
