Alachua County Preparing for the New Millennium Author: Bob G. Bates 12 Southeast First Street Phone: 352.491.4653 This session addresses changing GIS vendors and expanding from GIS on five desktops to having multidepartments GIS enabled all within a year. The experience of Alachua County, Florida, is used as a case study. There are three major areas that need immediate and thorough consideration during this process: new GIS vendor, conversion, and applications. Choosing a GIS vendor is the first of the three decision areas. Benchmarking is of critical importance to the vendor selection. Data conversion is very important. Consequently, both problems and successes encountered are highlighted. Not reinventing the wheel is a time-saver during the development of applications that are easy for everyone to use. Finally, lessons learned are discussed. |
