The challenge for the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (ICBEMP) was creating a tracking system for cartographic products that was accessible by all staff members and did not interfere with demanding production time lines. This was achieved by developing a run-time Access database tool, the Graphics Tracking System (GTS). The GTS is not a fully automated system, relying on map creators for data entry and administration.

The flexibility of the GTS allows tracking despite changing production methods, work environments, and personnel. The concepts of the GTS could be used to track map production in most GIS environments.
