The California Historical Resources Information System (CHRIS) is a State-wide system for managing information on historical resources. This information, maintained through hard-copy maps and documents, is being transferred to a computer database. Data is transferred and accessed via a secure FTP site. The importance in such a system as CHRIS is to provide immediate information for use in preservation, planning, and EIS/EIR decision making. In particular, having resources maintained in a GIS has been invaluable to emergency response organizations. In the event of a fire or oil spill, having immediate access to sensitive locations can prevent loss or damage.
