Tactical Data Collection and Rapid Response in Ecological Monitoring Author: Diederich Marcus 1200 East Colton Phone: 909-335-5268 The Salton Sea is an ecosystem in rapid change. Increasing salinity, nutrient loading from agricultural runoff, and intense summer heat create an extreme environment for fish and the migratory water fowl that depend on them; seven million fish died in just one day in 1999, disrupting wildlife and creating a health hazard for people. GIS is being applied to facilitate baseline data collection, monitoring, and tactical response to ecological catastrophe. |
