Geographic information systems are beginning to see application in a new and exciting arena. More and more, spatial technologies are making the transition from strictly non-real-time analysis into the realm of real/near real-time decision support. This paper presents the application of GIS technology in the development of a proof-of-concept display system for an aviation Command and Control (C2) environment.

The paper will address the barriers that still stand in the way of GIS incorporation into systems by way of practical lessons learned during the development of the concept, as well as provide an overview of potential future applications of GIS technology in such systems.
