As the GIS database increases in size and complexity, the existing system no longer handles access demands efficiently. LBWD identified current and future needs of GIS data and applications, studied the existing GIS environment, reviewed database management systems (DBMSs) and Esri software options (ArcInfo, SDE, ArcView GIS, MapObjects Internet Map Server [IMS], ArcExplorer), evaluated system configuration alternatives (UNIX, Windows NT, network communication), and developed system upgrade specifications for high-performance solutions. LBWD is implementing its GIS system upgrade to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges. |
