Research in protected areas ecology at the University of Guelph, Canada, has shown that national parks have experienced a decline in mammal abundance when compared to historical distributions. Studies at this scale depend on the use of GIS and data from mammal atlases as direct sampling is not possible. Yet, the reliability of such methods is unknown. This paper will present how GIS can be used to estimate mammal species numbers in parks and will evaluate the accuracy of these estimations by a comparison with results obtained from those parks that have completed comprehensive mammal surveys.
