The last quarter of the 20th century has seen an almost exponential increase in computing and GIS capabilities, coupled with an explosion in the phenomenon known as the Internet. While these trends foreshadow what GIS will mean to the 21st century, many of the databases in use are mired in the past. Though some sectors of the GIS user community, most notably utilities and many city/county efforts, maintain current databases that leverage state-of-the-art GIS tools, the database problem still plagues many "regional" efforts such as statewide, national, and global endeavors. This problem and strategies to meet the challenge are discussed.
