Realizing how a GIS could manage growth in the City of North Port, Florida, the City decided to move forward with implementation of a City-wide system incorporating seven departments. With the steady growth of this 75-square-mile city located in Sarasota County, Florida, the Community Development Department had the forethought to begin the process by assessing how implementation could occur through a needs assessment. The project began in 1997 with the development of a needs assessment and analysis study, with the actual implementation of a City-wide GIS in the spring of 1999. The four-phase implementation approach as recommended in the implementation plan prepared by Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. has moved at a steady pace with buy-ins from those departments interviewed during the needs assessment process. The City of North Port is also coordinating their efforts with Sarasota County's Information Technology Department and the County's property appraiser in order to further data compatibility between the City and these other County entities.
