Disaster response is one of the most critical events facing any insurance company. It requires tremendous amounts of planning and manpower and always has significant customer relations implications. A company is judged on how well it responds to customer needs after a disaster has occurred. This paper is focused on the role that precision geocoding must play in the efficient routing of insurance claims adjusters in a postdisaster (earthquake, tornado, or hurricane) situation. A fast, efficient response can greatly enhance customer relations while saving the company money. This paper links the precision geocoding processes provided by the GeoStan software engine with the routing algorithms contained in ArcLogistics Route. Both are essential to an optimum disaster response. The role of GIS in modeling adjuster times (per claim) based on damage contours and predisaster planning scenarios is also covered in this paper.
