Esri became a national partner with Project Impact on June 8, 1999, and has since worked with FEMA to provide support for building disaster resistant communities across the country. Esri has donated software and technical support directly to the Project Impact communities, developed an Esri Project Impact Web site aimed at educating the public about their risks from disasters, and developed the Esri-Project Impact Challenge Grant. The purpose of the grant is to foster and support the use of GIS technology by communities as a tool for implementing disaster resistance, articularly as it pertains to developing or implementing strategies for reducing damage from natural hazards. Four Project Impact communities were chosen to receive this grant for their innovative proposals for using GIS to develop or implement their damage prevention strategies--Rye, New York; Broward County, Florida; King and Pierce counties, Washington; and Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. These four communities will describe how they have used their grant to develop applications that help make their communities more disaster resistant.
