In October 1999, USACE introduced the NID GIS CD, free to the public. This software tool allows the user to easily view and query U.S. dam information both in geographical and traditional tabular formats. The NID is used for water resource management, emergency action planning, and allocation of federal resources.

In this product, the combination of MapObjects and VB offered application developers many advantages including flexibility and ease of use.

This paper and software demonstration aim to present some of the experiences and lessons learned from building and leveraging a large data set using a new generation object-oriented GIS tool.
