Solving a school redistricting plan is a difficult task even for professionals. In the hands of seven eighth grade advanced mathematics students at the Horace Mann Middle School in Franklin, Massachusetts, getting it done for GIS Day 1999 was the only concern. With the help of Des Lauriers & Assoc., Inc., Franklin, Massachusetts, in the technology area, the students set out to research, interview, and solve a real-world situation that Franklin, Massachusetts, will be facing with the construction of a new elementary/middle school to handle the growing population. What resulted was a fresh look using GIS technology at an ongoing problem that most communities will be facing in the near future.
