Brazil's national government is deploying a vast environmental monitoring system for one of the world's treasures-the Amazon Rain Forest in Brazil. One part of the System for the Vigilance of the Amazon (SIVAM), being developed by Raytheon, includes the capability to regularly create over 50 environmental surveillance products in the form of maps, reports and displays. SIVAM is comprised of three regional centers and a central facility where users from government, industry and academia will have access to environmental data and analysis tools. An overview of SIVAM's environmental products and underlying architecture is given, highlighting the role of GIS.
