Abstract

An ArcView 3.2 Extension and an ArcView 8.1 Extension for the Use of NWS NexRAD Rainfall Data for Hydrologic Modeling
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Roy Dodson, Brian Tao

The practice of hydrology has become increasingly GIS-dependent during the past several years. Although the effect remains to be seen, the introduction of the ArcGIS family, a scalable set of desktop GIS and integrated GIS application service products, is likely to further transform the way hydrologists compute and share data. ArcView 8.1, the most basic nonbrowser-based ArcGIS client, is crafted to be the future of the popular ArcView GIS. This paper attempts to illustrate the changes from ArcView 3.x to ArcView 8.1 by creating an ArcView 3.2 extension using Avenue and an ArcView 8.1 extension using Visual Basic for an application that utilizes available NWS NexRad rainfall data for hydrologic modeling. The advantages of using DBMS for spatial data storage (as opposed to file-based storage) and using ArcObjects for coding, which facilitates the interoperability of software, will be discussed.
