Abstract


Paper  Water Distribution System Optimization Using MapObjects and Genetic Algorithms

Many powerful water distribution optimization algorithms exist but few are currently in use by water utilities mainly due to the lack of suitable packaging. This paper presents a comprehensive decision support system for use in the effective management of water distribution systems. The software system links a geographic information system technology for spatial database management and analysis with network simulation and optimization theory. The optimization model automates network calibration and solves the least-cost design, rehabilitation, and pump scheduling problems. The graphical interface is developed using MapObjects and provides an informative structured framework for network model construction, optimization, and results presentation.
