Abstract

Integrated Woodlands Information Management Systems
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Barry Costello

Woodlands operations require management systems to plan, schedule, and administer operational activities to report on the results and impacts of these activities. This paper provides an overview of the Timberlands Information Management System (TIMS) developed for Weyerhaeuser Saskatchewan. TIMS was developed entirely using Visual Basic, Crystal Reports, ArcObjects, ArcSDE, and Oracle. TIMS is an object-orientated system. TIMS manages forest objects (temporal, spatial, and tabular) via events and rules. ArcSDE provides a seamless view of the entire database. TIMS also integrates with the contractor payables system. The paper focuses on applying Esri's geodatabase structures and open system concepts to forestry operations.
