Abstract
Practical Applications of GIS for a Complex Urban Interchange
Track: Transportation and Logistics

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation hired CH2MHILL to develop alternatives for reconstructing the Marquette Interchange located in downtown Milwaukee. CH2MHILL will prepare an environmental assessment (EA) to evaluate environmental and community impacts of this project. This paper demonstrates how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) enhanced this process through traditional spatial analyses and innovative applications such as developing a tool for construction staging. Construction schedules from Microsoft Project were integrated with the interchange geometry in ArcView 3.0 to provide a snapshot of the construction activities at a future date. This application is a powerful tool for programming and informing the community.
