Abstract

Un-contouring Your Data: Reading Between the Lines
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Ken Rukstales

Isarithms are invaluable for portraying thematic data on maps. But GIS analysis of surface data is best done using grids and TINs. ArcInfo and ArcView provide tools and extensions for creating grids and TINs from a mixture of contours, points, and polygons. The TOPOGRID tool is fine for creating hydrologically correct grids of elevation, but many data sets are isarithms of nontopological data. The CREATETIN command is more appropriate for these types of data. A discussion of using CREATETIN will be presented. Some tools, developed by the author, will be demonstrated that assist in removing flat triangles from your TIN to produce a more realistic surface.
