Abstract

Paper  Developing a Maintenance System for a Large Parcel Database in ArcSDE
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Robert Shankman, Greg Thomas

Once a parcel database has been converted to digital, the biggest concern is keeping it up to date. Users will always want to have access to the most up-to-date information and they want it fast. In Fairfax County, Virginia, ArcSDE was implemented to allow users to access the entire GIS database in a seamless environment with fast query access speed. The next step was to determine a way in which the data could be maintained in ArcSDE directly rather than the more common method of storing data redundantly in both ArcInfo LIBRARIAN and ArcSDE. Fairfax County chose NovaLIS to implement a system in which this is possible. This discussion will encompass three areas: the development of the system, the implementation of the system, and a user's viewpoint of the system. Staff from Fairfax County and NovaLIS will discuss the development of the system. This will include database design concepts and issues as well as work flow process issues and how they were resolved. There will also be discussion of the system architecture. Staff from Fairfax County and NovaLIS will also talk about the implementation of the system. This will include discussion of the software that was built and implemented and how it interacts with the SDE database. A Fairfax County representative will talk about the user viewpoint through this whole process. This will include how tasks have changed due to the implementation of this new system. They will also discuss the necessary testing that went on to ensure that the product would perform all the tasks necessary in maintaining the parcel database. This is to be a discussion of these topics from Robert Shankman of Fairfax County, Greg Thomas of Fairfax County, and Dave Horwood of NovaLIS.
