Title:
Technology integration in the Internet environment

Abstract:
Lessons learned from ArcIMS implementations.

Experience gained by using ArcIMS is presented. Amongst the topics will be lessons learned integrating ArcIMS into an Oracle Forms environment; methods used to access a central Fugro database for visualisation and selection of cable data; and development of a dedicated interface for visualisation and query of demographic data of the City of Rotterdam.

The standard Java and HTML viewers proved to be too limited for the latter application, and a completely new client was developed. Requirement from the City of Rotterdam was a user-friendly interface with a Windows look-and-feel. The Web interface therefore includes familiar menu and button bars. Pop-up windows enable the user to select data layers for visualisation. A migration from the current architecture, based on Shape files, to an Oracle-SDE environment is being investigated. The ArcIMS client has been built generically, and can be used as framework for other dedicated ArcIMS applications.

The City of Rotterdam will use the application (Cityalmanak) internally (Intranet) for all demographic data collected by various departments. The City of Rotterdam is cultural capital of Europe in 2001. In this light the application is possibly deployed with a cultural subset of the dataset via the Internet in Q3.
