Abstract:
This raster dataset is appended county MIRIS landuse data. County level vector files with a minimum polygon size of 2.5 acres were joined and converted to a raster (30 meter) dataset. The MIRIS land cover files represent a compilation of data from county and regional planning commissions or their subcontractors.
Purpose:
The statewide raster dataset was created to facilitate draw speed and analysis of landuse data. It is intended for general planning purposes.

Process_Description:
Land cover features interpreted from diapositives of original film according to level II and III modified Anderson/Hardy classification scheme of 52 categories. This interpreted data was transferred to 7.5' USGS topographic quadrangles. The quadrangles were then encoded by either digitizing or scanning methods. Individual quadrangle files were merged to form Public Land Survey township files. All compilation work was performed by local units of government or private consultants under guidelines developed by the Michigan Resource Information System (MIRIS), Michigan Department of Natural Resources. This classification system is available upon request. Labels were checked against original source according to standard MIRIS procedures.

Codes from Anderson/Hardy level II and III classification schemes were used to label landuse/cover types. CAUTION: The 4th level of definition was NOT in the original vector database. It was discovered that this level was in the LABEL field. Arbitrary values were assigned to the level 4 field(s) in the resulting database to retain this information. It was discovered later that the level4 was assigned in the Current Use Inventory document. The probablity that these do not match is very high. To use the lu1978_g database effectively use the names imbedded in the database.
