Abstract

Paper
Development of Software Tools for Environmental Field Studies Using ArcPad
Track: New Technology and Technology Integration
Author(s): Enrique Vivoni, Danield Sheehan, Mario Rodriguez, Sheila Frankel, Dara Entekhabi, Richard Camilli

Traditional field measurements in the environmental sciences largely depend on pencil and paper notes. Current advances in mobile computing, however, have spurred the development of software tools for improving data collection. This paper presents the development of an electronic field notebook for environmental data collection using various technologies for mobile devices. Among these, Esri's ArcPad 6 and a GPS were used to add a mapping and geolocation component to the data collection process. The integrated software application includes automated control of a water quality probe and manual input for other parameters. Potential applications include watershed management and environmental assessments.
