Abstract

Explaining the National Integrated Land System (NILS)
Track: Federal Government Systems
Author(s): Leslie Cone

The National Integrated Land System (NILS) will provide the user with tools to manage land records and cadastral data directly from field survey measuring equipment through mathematical computations into lines and points. This will create legal land and parcel descriptions to be used in mapping, resource management, and land record creation and maintenance. This concept implies the development of a common data model along with a set of GIS tools that unifies the worlds of surveying and GIS. NILS is a joint project between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service in partnership with states, counties, and private industry.
