Abstract

The Potential Impact of Web Services Oriented Architectures on State GIS Systems
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Michael Terner

New service-oriented architecture (SOA) initiatives from major vendors such as Microsoft (.NET) and Sune (ONE) will increasingly impact how computer applications, including GIS, are delivered to end users. Following the completion of GIS and e-government requirement analyses in both Maine and Massachusetts, this paper will discuss how an SOA may play a role in the further evolution of these mature, statewide systems. This paper will focus on describing how ArcGIS and ArcIMS, in combination with emerging Web services standards of SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, can deliver Web-mapping services to broadly support e-government portals.
