Abstract


Geo-Demographic Data Around the World: Character, Availability, and Limitations

The paper will feature information derived from a detailed yearlong survey of the national census and cartographic authorities of 25 leading GIS-using countries. Focus will be on the character of national-level GIS data sets and how the accuracy, content, and availability of geodemographic and infrastructure data influences the nature of possible spatial analysis, particularly in respect to marketing. Regional distribution of the counties covered include 12 in Western Europe, one in Eastern Europe, four in Asia, three in Latin America as well as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Israel. Examples of the use of ArcGIS and its extensions in business and marketing applications in each country will be provided, as will detailed information on vendors of data, price and availability (including over the Web) of national-level GIS data for each country.
