Abstract

Deep Infrastructure Contributions to the World Trade Center Relief Effort
Track: Homeland Security
Author(s): Wendy Dorf, K. Manion, Marina Haven

There are dates in the country's history that speak volumes; September 11, 2001, is one of those dates. Out of the World Trade Center tragedy arose many heroes, such as technology. Technology, in its form of geographic information systems, served as a true compass in the dangerous wake of the country's greatest urban tragedy. GIS was a fundamental coordinating tool that bridged the relief efforts. This paper will focus on the evolution of GIS, highlighted by Deep Infrastructure, to support relief efforts in the chaotic days and demanding weeks that followed the September 11 terrorist attack on New York City.
