This paper will cover what GIS is, what GIS is not, and provide a definition of GIS. The paper will identify why GIS is important to the public sector and provide some real-world examples of how GIS is applied at the City of Westerville in core job functions by using a GIS office suite concept including Web technology. Examples include economic development, crime analysis, and zoning. The presentation will also include a demonstration on embedding GIS functionality into Microsoft Office applications and using as a business tool and a tool to communicate basic concepts of GIS to new and/or potential users.
