Abstract

Developing a GIS Basemap for Public Libraries
Track: K-12 Education and Library Science
Author(s): Dean Jue, Christie Koontz

Although almost every county throughout the United States has a public library, there has not been an accurate basemap of the location of these libraries or ascribed legal service areas. In May of 2001, the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) contracted with the GeoLib Program at Florida State University (FSU) to develop such a GIS basemap. The first phase of this project has been completed. This session will discuss the development of the basemap in addition to the planned uses of the map for library managers, state libraries, library researchers, and policy makers.
